Arthur Miller was one of America's most well known playwrights, who sought to show the American Dream was not as happy a dream as it appeared on the surface. He viewed writers as moralists, not entertainers, and sought to show that the epic problems portrayed in the works of others were also the problems of the average man as well. He won many awards, including a Pulitzer in 1949 for Death of a Salesman. Much of his work has been brought to the movie screen and been performed in theaters around the world. He was held in contempt for refusing to comply with a congressional committee duing the McCarthy era, for standing by his liberal views and refusing to name friends and colleagues as possible communists. One aspect of his life that surprised many was his 10 year relationship and marriage to Marilyn Monroe. His recent death marks the end of an era, but his legacy continues through performances and further screen adaptations of his work.
